Gujarat carnage was planned much before Godhra (7)
New Delhi: The groundwork for the Gujarat carnage was put in place long before the Godhra carnage on
February 27, according to a fact finding report by a Delhi based rights organization, People’s Union for
Democratic Rights. In its report Maaro, Kaapo, Baaro: State, Society and Communalism in Gujarat, PUDR
has said that the organizers of the carnage tapped on a seam of hatred, based on anti-Muslim
propaganda, which had been carefully cultivated over many years. (Hindu 2.6.02)
PUDR report indicts Gujarat govt for riots (7)
NEW DELHI, June 1. — The fact that communal attacks continue even three months after Army
deployment and ' in face of criticism by political parties and the media, brings forth "complete absence" of
political will on the part of Gujarat government to sincerely assist the minority community and rebuild L
broken lives and homes. This is the conclusion of a 68-pages report "Maaro! Kaapo! Baalo!, State,
Society, And Communalism in Gujarat?, which was released today by the People's Union for
Democratic Rights. The PUDR alleged that the communal carnage in Gujarat was intended to "reduce
the Muslims to second class Citizens in their own Country". (Statesman 2.6.02)
Riots plan scripted much earlier: PUDR (7)
New Delhi: The People's Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) report on the Gujarat violence — released
here Saturday — said that the "whole intent of the program has been to reduce Muslims to second class
citizens in their . own country". It also alleged that the Gujarat riots were not an outcome of the Godhra
incident as the "planning" had begun much earlier and charged the state government with involvement in
the violence. "The fact that the Gujarat government supported the bandh of February 28 and March 1
despite its experience of large scale violence against Muslims after a similar bandh in 2000 is evidence of
its complicity in the violence right from the start, the report said.
PUDR has demanded dismissal of the Narendra Modi government and a CBI probe into major incidents of
communal violence, and expressed doubts over the Modi government's intentions with regard to taking
action against the perpetrators of riots. (Times of India 3.6.02)
Modi not in mood for CBI probe into riots (7)
Ahmedabad, June 2: DAMNING REPORTS by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the
People's Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) do not seem to have worried the state government. Both the
NHRC and the PUDR had criticised the government's handling of toe riots and demanded that tie CBI be
told to probe cases. The reports say that justice would be denied to victims if the local police continued to
probe cases. A senior minister, who requested anonymity, said the government would not hand over
probe to the CBI for the fear of being exposed. "There is ample circumstantial evidence to show the
government's complicity in the riots and the subsequent cover-up," said the minister. It would be suicidal
for Narendra Modi to agree to such a demand, he said. (Hindustan Times 3.6.02)
Jan Sangh slams Modi Govt. for Gujarat riots (7)
NEW DELHI, JUNE 2. The right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Jansangh (BJS), the progenitor of the BJP, has
accused the Narendra Modi Government of turning a Nelson's eye to the communal bloodbath in Gujarat.
At its two-day central office bearers' meeting, which concluded here on Saturday, the BJS also
demanded a "decisive war" with Pakistan, review of the Indus Water Treaty between the two countries
and reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir. The party also proposed the name of its veteran octogenarian
leader, Balraj Madhok, for the nation's Presidency. While supporting the creation of a 'Hindu Rashtra' in
India, the BJS in its resolution criticized the BJP zealots for trying to accelerate the process of Hindu
Rashtra. (Hindu 3.6.02)
