Our work to ensure
access to water
Just as there are many different reasons for the lack of clean
water, so differentiated responses are needed to address the
problem. In its projects, Caritas Switzerland works with partner
organisations and those directly affected to find the appropriate
solution. It builds wells, spring catchments, cisterns, water retaining
basins and irrigation systems for agriculture. Water committees,
on which both women and men are represented, ensure
equi table access and the necessary maintenance of the supply
systems. In each water project, Caritas pays special attention to
hygiene, for example by constructing latrines and organising
hygiene courses.
In the Cochabamba region of Bolivia,
drinking water systems were constructed
in 4 villages, with 165 water tap stands
for 520 families, 3 schools, 3 health posts
and 3 nurseries.

In South Sudan, 3,000 people in the
federal state of Eastern Equatoria gained
access to rain water from rock pools
and were trained in hygiene measures.
Thanks to a low-cost water cleaning
system, around 500,000 litres
of water were treated
in Bangladesh. In 3 villages,
648 households, 20 cookshops
and 1 school benefited.
