Since the beginning of the modern era, state and church are in an difficult relationship. In the course, we
will look at this relationship from several aspects – for example the separation of state and church as well
as being dependent on each other. In addition, we will consider indicators of this difficult relationship like
Ecological crisis and global environmental changes (e.g. climatic change, overpopulation, deforestration,
pollution, land degradation) have taken place throughout human history, and are therefore no novel
phenomena. What is novel is the ever-increasing intensity and extent of these changes as they are driven
by human activities. They also exert increasing effects on the security and well-being of societies. This
seminar deals with examples of ecological crisis and environmental changes in human history.
