Temperature 66 Temperature Deflection of metals Metals respond to a change in temperature by a corresponding expansion (deflection). <strong>Sensor</strong>s can be constructed in various ways to transfer this response. Bimetal strips: A bimetal strip is composed of two strips of metal with different coefficients of expansion, bonded together. As the temperature changes, one material (A) expands more than the other, causing the strip to bend. The curvature can be converted into an output signal. The Invar rod (metal B) does not change in length, with the result that the linear expansion of the tube is transmitted as a change in position. This, in turn, can be converted into an output signal.
