Efforts need to focus on broadening the pool from which representatives<br />

are selected. There needs to be a focus on developing talent to ready<br />

representatives for leadership roles.<br />

The governance cabinets and the committee structure provides a good<br />

opportunity for young professionals to gain experience.<br />

Conferences may be able to provide assistance by including more and<br />

different representatives in their meeting structure.<br />

The <strong>NCAA</strong> Convention can serve as a forum to provide development<br />

opportunities to young professionals.<br />

Identifying minority and female professionals for additional exposure to<br />

<strong>NCAA</strong> meetings.<br />

Increased efforts to discuss employment opportunities in intercollegiate<br />

athletics with minority and female student-athletes should be pursued.<br />

Efforts should be made to learn from successful programs in higher<br />

education and elsewhere, as lack of diversity is a societal problem.<br />

Mentoring efforts, including providing access to reading materials, a<br />

dedicated web site and meetings may be beneficial.<br />

An assessment of current <strong>NCAA</strong> professional development programs for<br />

females and minorities should be conducted to assess their level of<br />

success.<br />

[Note: The <strong>NCAA</strong> Diversity and Inclusion staff will be called upon to assist<br />

with this examination. For future discussions the Council asked to see<br />

governance service histories by conference.]<br />

b. Update regarding preliminary plans to examine Division I membership standards.<br />

LDC ACTION: Learned that as a result of the two-year moratorium in 2000,<br />

Division I developed a more detailed educational assessment program and standards<br />

to more clearly distinguish football playing institutions among subdivisions, but that<br />

the migration to Division I did not slow down. Accordingly, in August 2007, the<br />

Division I Board of Directors established a four-year membership moratorium to take<br />

time to assess and study the impact of this membership migration and develop<br />

reasonable philosophical expectations and legislative requirements that should be<br />

adhered to by all institutions desiring to transition to or remain in Division I; and
