PREPARING FOR FRIEND DAY This program is titled The Second Friend Day because many pastors who had a first Friend Day commented, “I can’t wait to have a second Friend Day.” However, we realize that in many cases it really won’t be your second Friend Day, but your third, fourth, or even fifth. Therefore, we recommend that you do not use the name of the resource packet, but simply call your special day, Friend Day. For that reason, we have dropped the words The second from the title, except where we are making direct reference to the resource packet itself The Second Friend Day is an attendance campaign designed to spur the growth of the church. It is intended to be implemented primarily through the worship service with support from the evening and mid-week services and the Sunday School. This method is recommended because attendance is generally higher in the worship services and because the Sunday School has structure and will give a greater opportunity for the church to gather the information required for follow-up. This section will show you how to involve the Superintendent and teachers in planning and then folding all the church members into the campaign effort. The schedule of activities below is based upon a nine-week campaign. However, only five weeks of the campaign will be in the public eye. The first three weeks require the involvement of the church leaders only. As soon as a date for Friend Day is chosen, write in dates for all the other weeks in this planning guide and on the planning calendar. This will eliminate the confusion that would be caused by referring to them by number as we have done here. � Check each item as it is completed. WEEK ONE DATE___________________ Monday � Call a special meeting of the church’s top leaders, including the Sunday School Superintendent and teachers. Ask for their support and explain how you wish each to be involved. (See meeting agenda among the implementation materials at the end of this section). Tuesday � Select all the items from the promotional section that must be printed and take them to the printer. � If the full-size color poster, textbook, gift book and coloring book by Church Growth Institute will be used, decide how many are needed and print them. Thursday
� Complete the planning with the church leaders. Plan everything that will be done as part of your Friend Day campaign. WEEK TWO DATE______________ During the week � The pastor should choose a well-known person in the town (bank president, mayor, chief of police, sheriff, owner/manager of a large plant or business, school principal, etc.) as his friend. (Invite several friends in case one is unable to attend.) � Request this person to send a letter saying he or she will come to Friend Day as the pastor’s friend. Offer to write the letter if they will sign it. (See sample letter at the end of this section.) The letter must be received by the end of Week 3. WEEK THREE DATE_______________ During the week � Pick up printing from printer. � The pastor should contact the Deacons and other leaders and give them a supply of “Yes” cards. Tell them that they will need to show these cards to the congregation the fifth week. Friday or Saturday � The Superintendent should meet with the teachers and hand out the books, lessons, “Yes” cards and other materials they will need (see implementation materials at the end of this section). � He should inform the teachers that they should have their completed “Yes” cards ready to show on the fifth Sunday of the campaign. WEEK FOUR DATE_____________ Sunday Sunday School � Announce Friend Day campaign. Note that friends will be the topic for the next month’s lessons. � Hand out How To Reach Your Friends for Christ in the teen and adult classes and ask students to read the Introduction and Chapter 1 and be prepared to discuss them in next Sunday’s class. Worship service � Have ushers distribute Friend Day bookmark (or stuff it in the bulletin). � Announce Friend Day and its date to the congregation. Explain the purpose. Encourage everyone to bring an unsaved or unchurched friend, not for the sake of just bringing someone, but out of genuine concern for that person’s spiritual well being. � The pastor should read his letter(s). � Announce that a special offering will be collected on the Sunday following Friend Day to cover the cost of the campaign. (These costs include the resource packet, printing, postage for mailings to members and friends, lapel pins, posters,
