The devastation of Warsaw in the
last War provides a great challenge
Varsoviarians in order to document
personnel histories. Since many inhabitants
were killed and the remainder
sometimes forces to emigrate to far off
distant lands; with their documents,
photos and artifacts probably destroyed,
their personal life stories are
diffi cult at best to recreate. Through
obituaries though we may get a fl eeting
glimpse to their life histories. Such as
Jan Schpringer (1840-1928), who prob-
ably had German ancestry but Polonized
his name to Szpringer. According
to the „Warsaw Courier” obituary, we
are told that he was a master miller and
a citizen of Warsaw (which means he
owned property in the city). He died on
14th of February 1928, at the age of 88,
and buried at the Calvinist Cemetery.
Did his family survive the War? We do
not know. Is this the only record of his
life’s accomplishments that we have to
date? Probably so.
Most of the industrial families in
fact had Germany ancestry. Here are
some examples. The Bormanns – owners
of a metallurgical factory, producing
pots and devices for the chemical production.
The Gerlachs were founders of
a manufacturing company, producing
precision optics, measuring and drawing
devices. Haberbuschs and Schieles
owned the largest brewery in Europe.
Hennebergs, founded a plated goods
factory. Jenikes – founders of the fi rst
factory producing elevators in Warsaw.
The Klawes – ran a pharmacy and laboratory.
They also founded one of the
biggest chemical-pharmaceutical factories
in Warsaw. The Krausses – owners
of a manufacturing company making
trunks and suitcases. The Oppmans
– the owners of a factory producing
mustard, named „Artur”. The Weigles
– up to the end of the 19th Century ran
a tanning factory.
Of course we should not forget to
mention the Wedel family who rendered
great service to our city. They were,
above all, outstanding confectioners as
well as important philanthropists. The

(1884-1918), ofi cer rosyjskich huzarów,
ciężko ranny w potyczce z bolszewikami,
zakłuty bagnetami; zmarł w szpitalu
w Kijowie 31 sierpnia 1918 roku.
Intrygującą postacią jest warszawianka,
hrabianka Salomea Hauke-
Bosak (1825-1895). Przez małżeństwo
z księciem Aleksandrem Hessen-Darmstadt
uważana jest za babkę wszystkich
panujących obecnie w Europie dynastii.
Jako morganatyczna żona księcia heskiego
otrzymała tytuł książęcy od kuzyna
męża wraz z dziedzicznym nazwiskiem
Battenberg. Nosiła je również królowa
angielska Elżbieta II, która po wstąpieniu
na tron w 1952 roku zmieniła jego
brzmienie na Mountbatten, odcinając się
od niemieckich korzeni. Obecnie głową
rodu Battenberg-Mountbatten jest prawnuk
Aleksandra – książę George, czyli
Jerzy (ur. 1961), wnuk królowej brytyjskiej
– czwarty markiz of Milford Haven.
