• CIFOR could compile a “manual” for local stakeholders to estimate carbon stock
according to the one they made for biodiversity called “Exploring biological diversity,
environment and local people’s perspectives in forest landscapes” (Markku).
o The ideas of Gen tend to the same direction (RS for local stakeholders)
• Working title for CIFOR could be “The role of sustainable forest management and carbon
stock as income generation for local communities and civil societies in the REDD-context”
• Climate Change is not one of the main CGIAR-issues or priorities. Our project has to be
positioned within Priority Area 4a of the GTZ/BMZ-Guidelines: “Integrated land, water and
forest management at landscape level”
• There is no need for forest inventory done by us because there are other sources
(Markku):
o Ministry of forestry
o Timber companies (cooperation with CIFOR)
o KfW-Project (see below)
o Other sources
• The research topics should be established on a cross-national level (Indonesian and
Malaysian part of Borneo) or at least be supervised by one person to guarantee a wellbalanced
processing of the tasks.
o Nevertheless the Universities of Sabah and Samarinda may work on a more
regional scale (data collection primarily on national level?)
• To Markkus knowledge there is currently no other working group of CIFOR looking for the
BEAF-grant (but there is one ongoing project with the University Göttingen)
• Probably Malaysia put not as much interest on the issue of REDD as Indonesia do (to the
knowledge of Stibniati and Jan)
• Climate modeling seems to be an outlier in the master plan therefore we have to clarify
how to link this topic to the structure of the project (Markku)
• CIFOR is involved in already existing projects of related types with German partners:
o Institut für Weltforstwirtschaft, Prof. Dr. Michael Köhl, Dr. Joachim Krug, Hamburg
(more an idea than a project)
o BEAF-Project with the University of Göttingen (Indonesia, Vietnam). The conception
of that project leads to a lack of effective co-operation what should be avoided in our
project. An ongoing project is no reason for a refusal.

o AusAID (Markku) REDD demonstration project on a large scale supported by
CIFOR
o FFI (Flora-Fauna-International, Frank Momberg)
o Heart of Borneo (WWF)
o Forest Partnership (WWF and Tropenbus)
o The Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau is planning a pilot project for the implementation
of REDD in Kalimantan. The KfW-project seems to be a potential partner as a client
