This is therefore, research on carbon accumulation in tropical rain forest is ultimately important. Vegetation types Vegetation types proposed in this research are: 1. Natural secondary forest consisting of Imperata grassland, Trema and macaranga association and Mixed secondary forest. Most of this forest could be found in secondary forest after forest fire and natural revegetation in reclamation area in East Kalimantan. 2. Artificial plantation consisting of Acacia mangium, Gmelina arborea or Eucalyptus spp. plantation. 3. Objectives To provide zonation map of Mahakam Delta for rehabilitation purpose based on existing land cover classification derived from satellite interpretation (Quickbird, coverage in 2006) b. Methodology • Land cover classification by visual interpretation using satellite imagery • Defining a critical area by land cover (for instance : open area should be the most critical area) • Defining a suitable zonation based on critical areal to 3 different zones which are Protected zone, Conservation zone (limited utilization allowed) and Other utilization zone • Defining suitable activities according to existing condition in the field which is dominated mostly by fish ponds rather than mangrove forest (ratio 60 : 40) c.
