Malaysia Meteorological Department MMD Minutes of the Meeting with Tan Huvi Vein Director of the Commercial, Climatology and Hydrology Division Malaysia Meteorological Department MMD Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia 19 th of January 2009, 14:15 to 15:15 • There are ten meteorological stations in Sabah and Sarawak Malaysia o Temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind, pressure, evaporation, sunshine and solar radiation o Monthly/daily/hourly recordings o Most of the stations have data record of more than 30 years and some are much longer (see below) o Other rainfall data are collected by third parties 43

SITF Minutes of the 2. SITF-Meeting Dr. Normah, Dr. Phua, Dr. Andy, Dr. Michael Fischer Kota Kinabalu, 21 st January 2009, 08:45 to 10:30 • Presentation of the findings of the trip by Jan o Two aspects: REDD on the one hand and assessment of carbon stock on the other • Possible contribution o Dr. Phua: Remote sensing (possibly as co-ordinator) o Dr. Normah and Dr. Andy: Carbon stock o Dr. Hardawati: Implementation of REDD • Development of tools for an assessment of carbon stocks (field work, GIS, remote sensing) would be a good selling point • The land-system-approach by Mulyanto/Bakosurtanal may be useful for the purposes of the project o It has to be supplemented by a land cover unit o Bakosurtanal is a very important partner for the SITF • The partners should agree upon the classification and definition of forest types early to contribute this to the proposal • As regards research topics three members of the UnMul seems to be qualified to the joint research proposal: Rita, Ali, and Bernaulus. Dr. Deddy should be the co-ordinator. • CIFOR may be on the top of the partners or at the same level as Hamburg and SITF • It would not be possible to deal with belowground biomass or soil, because that would exceed the capacities. In the opinion of Dr. Phua an examination of carbon flux will not be realistic • CIFOR has to develop the methods which are to be used under the project phase • Jan will prepare a rough sketch of SITFs Input to the project which should be discussed with the SITF-staff tomorrow as well as with the Hamburg University before it will be send to CIFOR 44
