Achieving our Best Self
Victoria Díaz-Zorita
every human being desires what he does not have. For instance, each time a person reaches
a goal, they immediately begin to desire something better than that as they are conscious of
the fact that something better is out there. As a result, it becomes a cycle where the
individual will never be 100% satisfied with his/her achievements in life. Clearly, a key
verb is to desire: “to wish or long for; to want” from which it can be noticed it is a very
strong feeling which can even be related to passion 5 too.
When reading I thought of a clear example most people are familiar with related to
these situations, technology. What I pictured was the case in which a new cell phone is
offered in the store and certain people saves money and sacrifices other items he/she
thought of buying or even sells other belongings in order to buy this apparatus. But as soon
as this person achieves the amount needed and buys it, a completely new and better one is
made. As a result of it, the person who has just obtained a new phone no longer wants that
model but the new one that has just entered the market.
In the previous example, the phone represents the goal set by the person, the process
of obtaining the money represents the effort and energy spent on it in order to reach that
goal and the new model is the representation of what the person knows is out there and
does not yet have but hopes to reach at some point. Besides, in this case it is very clear that
for a moment this character felt the satisfaction of reaching that goal but it did not last for a
long time as he/she soon realizes something better that what he/she had gained was
available.
5 powerful emotion, such as love, joy, desire, or anger
