Achieving our Best Self Victoria Díaz-Zorita not so, what probably is taking place is a situation in which you go on working on a project or challenge in order to satisfy your family/friends/public and obtain no satisfaction for yourself. Unlike the previous analysis, those who were training for the Marathon of Buenos Aires I interviewed shared a same objective. But still, I could spot some differences among them as a result of their personalities as well as their way of facing the challenge. They all coincided on the idea that internal motivation is essential and even more when the challenge is as complicated as running 42 km. The three of them believe that their major goal, to complete the race, is enough motivation in order to train and prepare for that day. But as weeks pass, the preparation is as well a great motivation. Y cuando recuerdes el motivo todo se hace más fácil”. What other runner, Luz María Francione 13 , clarified to me during the interview is that probably the objective is the major motivation because she is naturally very competitive and if she does not have a challenge in mind that actually forces her out of her comfort zone, she is incapable to go on training. It was then I asked her if she considers that others such as her trainer inspire her as well. Her answer to this was that from her point of view, all motivation is internal and that Hugo’s (coach) role is just to guide her in order to reach this goal as good as possible. Finally, what Alejandro Garcia Roselli 14 told me is that motivation is what keeps on moving us towards our goal but we need not only internal motivation but as well external (trainer, family, other runners, etc.) as well to stay focus on what we aim to achieve and help us not to give up. Alejandro is the only one who actually mentioned the fact of how important external motivation is or at least took it into account at the moment of mentioning what motivates him as a runner to compete on races such as marathons. On the other hand, as mentioned before, I interviewed Juan Bautista Thorne and Hugo Bressani who showed me how they work with motivation in order to inspire other people. He considers motivation something extremely important and the techniques he works with are applied depending on the situation of each worker. The techniques Juan Bautista mentioned are based on how it stimulates a worker in order to obtain higher results. Unlike individual challenges such as those present in the case of artists, one of the goals of his job Director of Human Resources in the firm Novozymes is to find in each worker what is the task he/she performs most naturally in order to have higher levels of productivity for the business. Once he finds it, he motivates the employee to improve in that area. This sort of situations takes place in all aspects but the difference is that in cases where results will affect a greater number of people, it is much more important to take advantage of the abilities of the person involved and as a result, their leader must decide what will be the best for all. However, in the case where the results will only affect the one person involved, he/she might at some moment obtain suggestions from others but in the end, the final decision will be made by the one facing the challenge depending on what he/she is aiming at. Going back to what Juan Bautista told me, this motivation could be presented in the shape of prizes and acknowledgements towards the employee as a result of his/her good job. Or a less positive one which consists on showing the employee that the results obtained are below that expected and a plan is set as to improve his/her performance on the area. In either of the two cases, if the worker actually gets better and the results are good enough, the possibilities of obtaining higher positions in the firm are present allowing the employee to grow in their career. On the other hand, Hugo Bressani 15 , gave me a much more humanistic perspective on how motivation can affect people. In order to show this, he based his answers on sports but he as well clarified that all these situations are reflected on all aspects of a person’s life. Something really interesting and important he told me is that all runners have something different that inspires them and at the same time, each needs a different amount of motivation in order to push forward their own limits. 15 Athlete and coach of the running team “Ironteam” ~ 25 ~
