2.2.1 Backbone IP: The Vertebral Spine
The backbone of the IP net, this is to say the vertebral spine of the IP
net, is constituted by a set of nodes and links that cover the most important
cities of San Luis. (fig. 5).
The main backbone is composed by thirty-six nodes, strategically
located in order to connect from there all the secondary nodes, and
from here the last mile links, those which the user accesses.
2.2.2 The AUI Shelters
The necessary communication equipment to ensure the operation of
the net are located at each main node. This equipment is set up in a
shelter.
A shelter is an enclosed space similar to a container, which allows the
storage of very sensitive electronic or telecommunication equipment,
in a controlled environment for proper operation.
The main features of the shelters that have been set up are:
• They are designed for operation under harsh weather conditions.
• They can store and protect telecommunications equipment
against several environmental agents such a dust, water, external
condensation, wind, moist air, rain, etc., according to the definitions
of the IEC529 in sections IP55 and IP54 (figure 7).
