The health providers at the hospital take pain seriously. We will do our best to stop any
pain your baby is having. If you have questions about the pain your baby may experience,
please ask your baby’s nurse or doctor.
ICTERICIA — JAUNDICE
La ictericia es más común en los bebés alimentados con pecho. Aquí están algunas cosas
que usted debe saber.
Jaundice is more common in breast fed babies. Here are a few things for you to know.
• Cuando su bebé sólo toma pequeñas cantidades de leche materna, sus intestinos no se
están moviendo y la bilirrubina no puede ser eliminada en el excremento.
When your baby only drinks small amounts of breast milk, his/her bowels aren’t
moving and the bilirubin can’t be removed in the stools.
• Los doctores recomiendan alimentar con pecho de manera contínua y frecuente (por
lo menos 8 a 10 veces cada 24 horas).
Doctors encourage continued and frequent breast-feeding (at least 8 to 10 times every
24 hours).
• Darle a su bebé agua, además de la leche materna, no va a disminuir su bilirrubina en
la sangre.
Giving your baby water, in addition to breast milk, will not decrease his/her bilirubin
level.
• En algunos casos, el médico de su bebé puede pedirle suplementar con fórmula o
interrumpir temporalmente la leche materna substituyendo con la fórmula.
In some cases, your baby’s doctor may encourage supplementation with formula or
the temporary interruption of breast-feeding with substitution of formula.
• Si le piden utilizar un método diferente por 1 a 2 días, continúe sacando la leche cada
3 horas y guarde su leche materna como le enseñó su enfermera.
If you are asked to use a different method of feeding for 1 to 2 days, continue to
pump every 3 hours and store your breast milk as your nurse has taught you.
La ictericia, en la mayoría de los casos, es normal e inofensiva, y generalmente
