Your baby’s umbilical cord starts to dry as soon as the baby is born. The umbilical cord
should fall off in approximately two to three (2-3) weeks. Keep it clean, dry and exposed
to air.
• Wash your hands before touching the cord.
• Sponge bathe your baby until the cord has fallen off.
• Fold the diaper below the cord. Exposure to air will help the drying process.
• If the cord becomes soiled with urine or stool, clean it with warm water.
• When the cord falls off, there may be a small amount of bleeding.
• If there is a yellow-green drainage, foul odor or redness of skin near the cord, contact
your baby’s doctor.
• When you lay your baby down for sleep, place the baby on his or her back. Do not
put your baby down to sleep on his or her tummy. Let your baby have some “tummytime”
when awake.
• Mantenga los barandales arriba.
