How to Take a Rectal Temperature
Normal rectal temperature is 99.6º F, with a range of 98º to 100.4º F. A thermometer used
for rectal temperatures should not be used for oral temperatures.
1. Vea el termómetro para estar seguro de que no está roto.
Look at the thermometer to be sure it is not broken.
2. Lubrique la parte final del termómetro con jalea de petróleo (petroleum jelly en
inglés).
Lubricate the end of thermometer with petroleum jelly.
3. Ponga al bebé sobre su estómago en la cuna o sobre su regazo. Separe las nalgas para
poder ver fácilmente el recto.
Place baby on stomach in crib or across your lap. Spread buttocks so rectum is easily
seen.
4. Inserte el termómetro suavemente en el recto hasta que el bulbo plateado no sea
visible; aproximadamente 1/2 pulgada.
Insert the thermometer gently into rectum so the silver bulb is not visible,
approximately 1/2 inch.
