La figura 8.2 incluye algunosejemplos de empresas que han obtenido múltiples beneficios gracias a esta práctica.::: Segmentación de mercados de consumoPara segmentar los mercados de consumo se utilizan dos grandes grupos de variables. Algunosinvestigadores delimitan los segmentos en función de las características descriptivas delos consumidores: geográficas, demográficas y psicográficas. Luego, analizan si los segmentosde consumidores presentan diferentes necesidades o respuestas ante los productos. Porejemplo, examinan si existen diferentes actitudes hacia la “seguridad” como atributo de unautomóvil por parte de los “profesionales ”, “trabajadores con ingresos bajos” y otros grupos.Otros investigadores parten de consideraciones “conductuales” para definir los segmentos;por ejemplo, analizan cómo responden los consumidores ante las ventajas de un producto, susocasiones de uso o las diferentes marcas. Una vez definidos los segmentos, los investigadoresbuscan las diferentes características asociadas con cada uno. Por ejemplo, se podría investigarsi las personas que buscan “calidad” en lugar de “precio bajo” a la hora de comprar un vehículocomparten características geográficas, demográficas o psicográficas.Independientemente del esquema que se utilice al realizar la segmentación, la clave esque el programa de marketing se ajuste de forma rentable a las diferencias de los consumidores.En la tabla 8.1 se resumen las principales variables de segmentación (geográficas, demográficas,psicográficas y conductuales).Segmentación geográficaLa segmentación geográfica se caracteriza por dividir el mercado en unidades geográficasdiferentes, tales como naciones, estados, regiones, municipios, ciudades o barrios. La empresapuede operar en una o varias áreas, u operar en todas pero prestar especial atención alas variaciones locales. Por ejemplo, Hilton Hotels personaliza las habitaciones y los vestíbulosen función de la ubicación del hotel. Los hoteles del noreste estadounidense son sobriosy más cosmopolitas, mientras que los del suroeste son más rústicos. Los grandes minoristascomo Wal-Mart, Sears, Roebuck & Co., y Kmart permiten a los responsables locales disponerel surtido de los productos de manera que se ajuste a las comunidades locales. 24
