MY GRANDMA EMILIANA
My grandmother’s name is Emiliana Muñoz Vázquez, but everybody calls her Mili. She grew
up in the countryside and lived there until she got married. The toys she had were made of cardboard,
but sometimes she went to town to play with other girls, for example the skipping rope.
She was very little time at school because she had to work and help at home. For example,
she picked olives and, in the meantime, took care of pigs. As she liked studying but she couldn’t, she
did sums on a flat stone.
In those years, people earned very little money. She tells me that in the olive season she only
earned money to buy some shoes and cloth to make a coat. The food was not abundant either, but
she did not go hungry. She always ate chickpeas without enjoying other things.
