Abstract:
Public transport in Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava and Kirkkonummi is provided by
five different modes of transport. Bus, tram, metro, commuter train and ferry services each have
their own cost structures. The costs play their role in determining which mode of transport is the
most favorable for each area. In addition to cost factors, the choice of the most suitable mode of
transport is influenced by the operating environment and demand.
This study presents unit costs for 2010. The data has mainly been extracted from the financial
statements of HSL. Some of the data had to be generated specifically for this study. With regard to
Helsinki internal transport services, the study also reviews changes in costs in 2006–2010.
