Structure [ Révision LES JEUNES Les expressions négatives Making a sentence negative 1. The placement of the most commonly used negative expression, ne... pas, is as follows: Il ne sort pas. Elle ne va pas sortir. Il n’est pas sorti. Elle ne peut pas sortir. When negating an infinitive, however, both ne and pas precede the infinitive. Ses parents lui ont dit de ne pas sortir. When a pronoun (or double pronouns) is involved, ne and pas go around the pronoun-verb block or the pronoun-auxiliary block. Je ne lui envoie pas d’invitation. Je ne lui ai pas envoyé d’invitation. Je ne lui en envoie pas. Je ne lui en ai pas envoyé. Note the placement of the ne... pas in the following sentences. Je ne vais pas lui envoyer d’invitation. Je ne veux pas lui envoyer d’invitation. 2. The following negative expressions follow the same placement pattern as ne... pas. ne... pas du tout not at all ne... plus no longer, not anymore ne... jamais never ne... rien nothing Ça ne me dérange pas du tout. The following expressions follow the same pattern as ne... pas when only one verb is involved. ne... personne nobody ne... ni... ni neither. . . nor Elles ne parlent à personne. Je n’aime ni le rock, ni la techno. Note their placement in the passé composé or when two verbs are involved. Je n’ai vu personne. Je ne veux voir personne. Je n’ai parlé ni à Marie, ni à Loïc. Je ne veux parler ni à Marie, ni à Loïc. 4. To express no, not any, or none, (ne)... aucun(e) is used. —Il a des amis? —Non, il n’a pas d’amis —Non, il n’a aucun ami. —Non, aucun. —Elle a des amies? —Non, elle n’a pas d’amie. —Non, elle n’a aucune amie. —Non, aucune. 5. In French, unlike English, more than one negative can be used in the same sentence. Il n’a rien dit à personne. Ils ne sont plus jamais revenus. Note, however, that pas is never used in conjunction with another negative word. 6. The following adverbs are often used in question–negative answer exchanges. Already Not yet —Il est déjà là? —Non, il n’est pas encore là. Still No longer —Il est toujours là? —Non, il n’est plus là. Always Never —Elle est toujours en retard? Sometimes —Elle est quelquefois en retard? —Non, elle n’est jamais en retard. Often —Elle est souvent en retard? Ever —Elle a déjà été en retard? —Non, elle n’a jamais été en retard. 7.
