THE AUTOMOBILE AS PIECE OF ART

Cela fait plus de 35 ans que je vis au milieu des automobiles,
m’occupant de style et en contact avec les designers,
les concepteurs, les modeleurs. J’ai vécu la révolution
informatique qui a fait ranger les machines à dessiner et
les plans de forme au grenier, j’ai connu les vrais carrossiers
et la réalité virtuelle. C’était une expérience tellement
enthousiasmante et prenante qu’il m’a suffi t de construire
des autos sans jamais me demander si elles pouvaient être
considérées ou non comme des œuvres d’art. Et pour ce qui
concerne mon travail, la réponse m’intéresse assez. Mais que
dire des fragments qui ont créé l’histoire de l’automobile, du
style, des fragments uniques venus du passé, exemples de
créativité et de virtuosité artisanale?
Je n’ai aucune réponse à donner mais plutôt quelques
réfl exions à partager.
Il existe une diff érence entre l’art, entendu comme une
activité de la créativité et l’œuvre d’art qui en est le résultat
tangible.
La peinture est sans aucun doute un art contrairement à la
toile peinte par un novice sans talent; la poésie est un art
contrairement au texte à rimes d’une chansonnette.
Les eff orts de création peuvent être nombreux, seule une
partie minime peut se targuer de la valeur d’œuvre d’art.
Ainsi, ce n’est pas à l’automobile dans son ensemble mais
plutôt à certains détails automobiles que nous pourrons
(peut-être) apposer le titre d’œuvre d’art. Les œuvres d’art
reposent, par élection, dans les musées, les pinacothèques,
les galeries d’art moderne.
Aujourd’hui, les musées d’art moderne ont accueilli à
plusieurs occasions des expositions temporaires dédiées aux
automobiles.
Sono più di 35 anni che vivo in mezzo alle automobili,
occupandomi di stile, a contatto con designer, progettisti,
modellatori. Ho vissuto la rivoluzione informatica che
ha fatto riporre in soffi tta tecnigrafi e piani di forma, ho
conosciuto i veri battilastra e la realtà virtuale.E’ stata
un’esperienza così entusiasmante e coinvolgente che mi è
bastato farle, le auto, e non mi sono mai chiesto se potessero
essere considerate o meno opere d’arte. E, per quello che
riguarda il mio lavoro, la risposta mi interessa relativamente.
Ma che dire dei pezzi che hanno fatto la storia
dell’automobile, dello stile, pezzi unici che arrivano dal
passato, esempi di creatività e virtuosismo artigianale?
Non ho risposte da dare, piuttosto qualche rifl essione da
condividere.
C’è una diff erenza fra l’arte, intesa come una attività della
creatività e l’opera d’arte, che ne è il risultato tangibile.
La pittura è un’arte senz’altro, ma non lo è la tela dipinta da
un dilettante senza talento, la poesia è un’arte ma non lo è il
testo in rima di una canzonetta.
Tanti possono essere gli sforzi creativi, solo a una minima
parte può essere esteso il valore di opera d’arte. Dunque
non all’automobile nel suo insieme ma piuttosto ad alcune
specifi che automobili potremo (forse) apporre il titolo di
opera d’arte. Le opere d’arte stanno, per elezione, nei musei,
nelle pinacoteche, nelle gallerie d’arte moderna.
Ora in più occasioni i musei di arte moderna hanno ospitato
temporanee dedicate ad automobili.
Dalla leggendaria “8 Automobiles” di Arthur Drexler nel
1951 al MOMA che diede alla Cisitalia 202 berlinetta lo
stato di “rolling sculture”. Diverse vetture sono ospitate nella
collezione permanente di questo museo a quella “The art of

with designers and modellers. I have experienced the IT

My personal experience was so exhilarating and enthralling
that creating cars was all I needed, I never actually asked
myself the question whether cars could be works of art,
and, as far as my work is concerned, the answer is not so
important to me. However, what to say about the pieces that
have made the history of automobiles and of style, of those
unique pieces coming right from the past, true examples of
creativity and handicraft virtuosity?
I have no answers to give, only some thoughts to share.
There is a diff erence between art, as a product of creativity,
and works of art, which are its tangible result.
No doubt that painting is an art, but the canvas painted by
an untalented amateur is not; poetry is an art, but the lyrics
of a pop song are not.
Of a number of creative eff orts, only a minimum part may
gain the value of work of art. Therefore the qualifi cation
of work of art can only apply (perhaps) to some specifi c
cars, and not to cars in general. Works of art are located in
museums, picture galleries, or modern art galleries.
In various occasions modern art museums have dedicated
temporary exhibitions to cars.
From the legendary “8 Automobiles” by Arthur Drexler in
1951 at MOMA, which gave the status of “rolling sculpture”
to the saloon Cisitalia 202. Many cars are included in the
