Artisanship in the Francophone and Métis communities takes various forms: it can be
about art for the beauty of creating, but it can also be – and this used to be particularly
true – for household purposes. Whether one thinks of knitting, crocheting or other forms
of weaving, or wood, leather or metal work, this artisanship, certainly primarily utilitarian,
reveals a unique skill and aesthetic sensibility. Here are some of the numerous artisans
who still practice their art in the region.
Denise Robert
Le tissage de blé / Wheat Weaving
Denise Robert, qui a enseigné à Domrémy de nombreuses
années, est aussi connue localement pour ses créations
artisanales en blé tissé. Elle a découvert cette technique en
participant à un cours organisé, il y a une trentaine
d’années, par Marie-André Georget de Domrémy.
Passionnée par cet art, elle a continué à se former en
autodidacte jusqu’à l’enseigner elle-même à Domrémy et à
proximité. Elle a élaboré, au fil des ans, plus d’une centaine
de patrons originaux surtout d’animaux et de fleurs. Elle a
notamment beaucoup travaillé sur des reproductions du lys
de la Saskatchewan (Tiger Lily ou Lys de Colombie) et de
colibris. Ses œuvres ont été exposées dans les
municipalités proches de Domrémy ainsi qu’à Saskatoon.
Toujours en quête de créations originales, Denise a introduit
depuis quelques années du blé à barbe noire dans ses
travaux. Puis, inspirée par des sculptures de fleurs
anglaises datant du 18 e siècle, elle a élaboré un instrument
doté de trois aiguilles lui permettant de fabriquer ce type de
pièce. Son nouveau projet à long terme consiste à
confectionner une série de panneaux retraçant l’histoire de
Jeanne d’Arc, la patronne de Domrémy. Elle en a déjà réalisé
deux et regorge d’idées pour ceux qui sont à venir.
Denise Robert, who taught in Domrémy for many years, is also known locally for her
artisanal creations of woven wheat. She discovered the technique when she took part in a
course some thirty years ago organized by Marie-André Georget from Domrémy. Enthusiastic
about this art, she continued teaching herself before setting out to give classes in wheat
weaving in Domrémy and the surrounding area. Over the years, she has developed over 100
original patterns, mostly animals and flowers. In particular, she has put a great deal of work
into reproducing the Saskatchewan lily (tiger lily) and hummingbirds. Her work has been
exhibited in towns around Domrémy as well as in Saskatoon.
Always seeking to create original pieces, a few years ago Denise introduced blackbeard wheat
into her work. Then, inspired by 18th century English floral sculptures, she developed a
three-needled tool that allows her to produce this type of piece. Her new long-term project is
to create a series of panels tracing the story of Joan of Arc, patron of Domrémy. She has
already completed two and is brimming with ideas for upcoming panels.
