RAPPORT ANNUEL 2012 ANNUAL REPORT 2012 SECURITE ALIMENTAIRE Face à l’insécurité alimentaire qui frappe encore chaque année des milliers d’enfants et leurs familles, World Vision Sénégal développe des stratégies mises en œuvre à travers des programmes pour permettre aux communautés d’intégrer les bonnes pratiques de résilience et d’atteindre la sécurité alimentaire avec une amélioration des revenus des ménages en vu de contribuer au bien être durable des enfants. Abdou Thialle le chef de village de Diassoum reconnait les bienfaits de la RNA Abdou Thialle le chef de village de Diassoum reconnait les bienfaits de la RNA Pour atteindre cet objectif, World Vision Sénégal travaille avec les communautés autour de ces activités : les banques céréalières, les périmètres maraichers et la diversifi cation des revenus des ménages, Banques Céréalières : L’une des réponses de World Vision à l’insécurité alimentaire et pour asseoir la résilience des communautés, ce sont les banques céréalières (stockage communautaire des récoltes). World Vision Sénégal a facilité leur création et continue d’assister les communautés dans leur fonctionnement, par le biais de la formation de ses comités de gestion et la reconstitution des stocks. FOOD SECURITY Facing the food insecurity that still touches thousands of children and their families every year, World Vision Senegal developed strategies implemented through programmes, with the goal of making it possible for communities to incorporate best practices for resilience against food insecurity and to improve food security by improving household revenues in order to contribute to the sustained wellbeing of children. To achieve this objective, World Vision Senegal works with communities on the following activities: grain banks, entrepreneurial market gardens and diversifi cation of household income, improved seed quality, FMNR (Farmer managed natural regeneration) and environmental protection. Cereal banks: One of World Vision’s responses to food insecurity and to provide a basis of community resilience is the cereal banks. World Vision Senegal helped setting them up and continues to support communities in running them by training its management committees and by restocking provisions. Thanks to these grain banks, these communities have grain available at a good price in the lean season, which generally runs from about June to September. The success of grain banks within communities is felt in terms of the enthusiasm and hope it brings to them. In the Kaffrine area, for example, the 339 members of the Loumène grain bank are from 7 villages: Keur Thierno, Keur Ndiaye, Ndiayen Bagana, Keur Mbabou, Lanta, Mboumam and Loumène. In 2012, the grain bank has gathered a capital of 11 tonnes of grains. Market gardens and diversification of household income: World Vision Senegal has helped members of many communities benefi t from an irrigated plot of land in Kaffrine and Fatick. Income from related activities has improved the economic situation of households. Moreover, they were trained in household income diversifi cation with the creation of small producers of local products, for the sustained wellbeing of children. What has been done? Development of market garden plots; Diversifi cation of household income, for the wellbeing of children; Promotion of a local dairy industry in Vélingara. World Vision Sénégal concourt à promouvoir la résilience des ménages surtout les plus vulnérables. World Vision Senegal, helps to promote the resilience of households, especially those who are most vulnerable. Grâce à ces banques les communautés ont des céréales disponibles et à bon marché durant la période de soudure qui est plus remarquable de juin à septembre. 9 What are the results? Development of 57 hectares, 40 of which have a drip irrigation system; 800 households totalling 8,000 individuals have benefi tted from an irrigated plot in Kaffrine; 490 lead farmers trained in the transformation of local products and market gardens; 3,130 clients, of which 73% are (primarily rural) women, are working in market gardens, small business, transformation of grains and animal husbandry, receive the support of World Visions Micro Finance program SEMFIN; 08 dairies with a daily capacity of 500 litres in Vélingara.
