Therefore, theSwimming Pool Trade Association[Fédération des Professionnels de la Piscine(FPP)] decided to make a commitment tothe public in order to prevent the risk of anyproliferation of this situation and to setdown a few useful recommendations:Only members of the association areauthorised to represent themselves assuch (if in doubt, visit the trade directoryon www.propiscines.fr) Beware of offers with unusually low prices Beware of spectacular discounts that are tooeasily obtainedCheck that the enclosure offered meets therequirements of standard NFP 90-309On this issue, swimming pool enclosure manufacturers,members of the FPP, being all too aware ofthe problem, recently agreed to the terms of aCharter of Professional Conduct called the "SWIM-MING POOL ENCLOSURE EXPERTS’ CHAR-TER", a veritable code of conduct applicable to thetrade. This document will be initialled by all thecompanies concerned during a meeting to be heldwithin the confines of the Lyon PISCINE 2006 fair,at 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday 15 th November.IT IS REQUIRED BY LAW Since January 1 st 2004 all newly built private pools,whether for family or professional use, had to be equippedwith a standardized safety device designed to guardagainst the risk of drowning. Since May 1 s t 2004, all existing pools of houses whichare let as holiday homes must also be fitted with such adevice. January 1 st 2006, all other existing pools must beequipped.This applies to: Private pools for family or community use which areoutdoors and either in ground or partially in ground.This does not apply to: Pools located inside buildings Inflatable or above ground pools that can be dismantled Swimming establishments (pools that come underthe law of May 24 th 1951) which charge an entrancefee and which are supervisedby qualified swimming instructors.2006 Inquiry DROWNINGFirst interim resultscovering the periodfrom the 1 st June to the16 th August 2006In 2006, the INVS (National Institute forMonitoring Health) repeated its survey ondrownings that occurred in private familyswimming pools and restated the fact that preventionis the best way of providing protectionfrom accidental drowning.
