he first image of the 50th Shooting
World Championship shows
a bright blue sky with just a thin
layer of white clouds here and there. This sky,
showcasing the Bavarian colors, marks the
first stage of the opening ceremony and the
blue and white „roof“ over the Marienplatz
really could not have embellished the shooting
world‘s return to Munich any more ceremoniously.
fact, the entire shooting sport world is
assembled there, just like it did before during
the 1972 Olympic Games. In the post-Olympic
years, Munich and the facility in Hochbrück
were, in every respect, a problematic area for
our International Shooting Sport Federations.
Nothing like this huge gathering of champions
and nations has been witnessed since

The theme of the next postcard is the group
of influential personalities from the world of
sports, who, obligingly and good- naturedly,
are being photographed under the glockenspiel
in front of Munich’s Town Hall. IOC
president, dr. JAcqueS rogge, his Vice-
President thoMAS bAch, who is taking on
multiple roles as host and president of the
German Olympic Committee, the President of
the ISSF, olegArIo váZqueZ rAñA, who,
just a few days earlier, had been unanimously
re-elected in the general meeting. The “giants”
of international sports happily joined the participating
nations and audience at the Marienplatz.

evident that the opening ceremony of the
World Championship is not only reserved
for those with accreditation or insiders, but
is more a collective celebration for everyone.
The most important world sport authorities
marvel at Bavarian folk dances, the traditional
costumes and music along with the
general public. It is hard to imagine a better
advertisement for the sport of shooting.
