“This is by far the best World Championship that the ISSF has ever
organized, the best shooting sport competition of all the times!” The
ISSF President Olegario Vázquez Raña said on Marienplatz’s stage, at
the opening ceremony of the 50 th ISSF World Championship in Munich.
The IOC President Jacques Rogge and the IOC Vice President Thomas
Bach visited the Championship and saluted the event as a “great sport
festival”, the first Olympic qualifier for the 2012 London Games among
all the sports. The number of the record championship supported their
enthusiastic statements: 477 medals were awarded to the strongest
sportsman between the 2000 participants of 103 countries, who competed
in 55 different shooting events. And, for the first time in the ISSF
history, the Championship was made available to more than 2 billion
of TV sets around the world, and footage of the competition was seen
by 590 millions spectators, as independent agencies confirmed. “We
delievered it. The event was a success. – President Vázquez Raña said
– And we will now keep on working for the development of our sport,
on the path leading to the next Olympic Games!”
