Performance Opportunities
Vrygrond Parade: As a lot of you will know, 21 March in South Africa is Human Rights Day. What some of you may not
know is that it's also World Puppetry Day...and we've got a line-up and a half for you! Assitej South Africa is holding a
community parade in Celebration of World Day of Theatre for Children on 20 March in Vrygrond (near Muizenberg) in the
streets outside their new premises. It's set to be a fabulous affair; with performers, puppeteers, learners from Capricorn
School, funders and stakeholders, a police escort, residents from Ocean View and Vrygrond… and possibly even the
Premiere or Mayor paying a visit! There will also be members of the press
and general media invited, so it's a fantastic opportunity to draw the
country's attention to our discipline and abilities. If you would like to know
more about it or propose a short (short!) piece of puppetry, mask and/or
object theatre please email Penny or Justin. Please note there will be no
remuneration, but a great chance to see and be seen on the local scene!
Active Puppets in the Artscape: Active Puppets have been given the
opportunity to showcase their work in the Artscape on 25 March 2012, to
commemorate the long hours our trainees have put in as part of the
ongoing Proactive Workshops and Training; and share their contribution
with the broader puppetry community. Active graduates from past years are also invited to perform their work...and the
day will be a chance for members to see productions as well as "behind-the-scenes" from one of our most successful
programs at Puppetry South Africa.
Members are encouraged to give constructive criticism, engage on a personal level with makers and manipulators and
foster reltionship and dialogue with other Puppetry South Africa members - whether emerging or established. The day
will also be a space for for ex-mentors to revisit their trainees and see how the pieces have developed since their initial
showcase presentation. We particularly encourage anyone who has been involved with Active Puppets (at any level) to
attend. It's important for us to be aware of the impact we're making on our communities and celebrate how far we've
come - and the selfless individuals who've helped us get there.
Come to the Artscape Arena on 25 March (it's happening the whole
day) and experience the power of puppetry with us!
If you'd like to contribute a short piece (or an extract from a longer
performance) and you have an association with the Active Puppets
programme, please forward your proposal to Penny or Justin - with
the subject line "Artscape World Puppetry Day". Please note that we
cannot pay performers for their productions, but we can offer
marketing and a platform for your show.
Looking forward to seeing more of you and your work soon!
