Victory in the 2019 Bol
d’Or Mirabaud ought
not to evade the D35s,
in their last season on
the lake. As for competition
in all the other
classes, it is sure to be
as superb as ever.
You can never be sure
of victory in the Bol
d’Or Mirabaud. Last
year’s incredible finish
made that quite clear.
In pitch darkness and
barely with ripples, a
half-dozen multihulls
got to within 500
meters of the line
before Christian Wahl
caught an unexpected
breath of wind to
celebrate his birthday
and his 7 th win in this
prestigious regatta.
The “Léman sorcerer”
knows better than
anyone that this race
is one of a kind and
is very often a war
of attrition. But since
2004 it has been clear
that, for some hardly
indiscernible reason,
a D35 is going to win.
The awesome local
catamaran has aged
little since its launch.
Only once, in 2013, did
one boat manage to
break the supremacy
of the kings of the lake.
The Ventilo M1 Zenith
Fresh benefited from
ideal light conditions
that enabled it to show
off all its merits. With
its large “wings” and
featherweight construction,
it sailed for several
seasons under Safram
colours, and is the only
to have unseated the
D35s from podium.
“The problem is that
we’re alone, facing an
armada of D35s, and
our crew are all just
enthusiastic amateurs”,
points out Rodolphe
Gautier, skipper of
Safram and president of
the Bol d’Or Mirabaud.
