Le créateur du premier véhicule
motorisé à Madagascar
Homme brave et à la fois ingénieux, Victorien
Razafindrabe est l’inventeur de la première
automobile malgache: et même de la
première automobile fabriquée par un africain
au temps de la colonisation.

ictorien Razafindrabe est un simple fonctionnaire
officiant en tant qu’interprète durant la période
coloniale. Il devient ensuite un exploitant à son
compte mais reste patriote et nationaliste. C’est
pourquoi, durant l’insurrection de 1947, il devient
chef de guerre et dirigeant du soulèvement dans la forêt Sud
de Moramanga. En reconnaissance à sa bravoure et à son
humilité, un lycée public de cette
ville porte aujourd’hui son nom.
Un jour, il fut obligé, faute de
moyens, de se déplacer à pieds,
sous le soleil brûlant, avec toute sa
famille de la Capitale à Moramanga,
une ville située à plus de 100 km à
l’Est d’Antananarivo. Une fois arrivé,
il lui est venu l’idée de fabriquer un
véhicule motorisé afin de faciliter
ses déplacements. Déterminé, il
concrétisa son rêve et commença
par rassembler tous les matériaux
présents localement. Grâce à ses
relations, il pu importer le moteur et les pneus. Il lui a fallu
11 mois de travail acharné ainsi que plusieurs essais avant
de pouvoir sortir son oeuvre de son atelier: une automobile
motorisée deux places! C’était le 5 Février 1928. Le lendemain,
cette création fut présentée à l’administration coloniale de
la ville de Moramanga et lui a valu l’admiration du chef de
province, Gougueluy, ainsi que de toute la population locale.
The creator of Madagascar’s
first motor car
Both hard-working and ingenious, Victorien
Razafindrabe was the inventor of Madagascar’s
first motorcar: even the first car to be
manufactured by an African during the colonial
period.
Victorien Razafindrabe was a simple civil
servant working as an interpreter during
the colonial period. He then became a selfemployed
farmer, but remained patriotic
and nationalistic, so that during the 1947
insurrection, he led the uprising organised in the forest
south of Moramanga. As a homage to his bravery and
humility, a state high school in the
town has been named after him.
One day, for want of any other
means, he and his family had to
walk in the burning sun from the
capital to Moramanga, a town
located over 100km to the east
of Antananarivo. Once there, he
decided to manufacture a motorcar
to facilitate his future journeys.
Very determined, he started to
collect all the necessary elements.
Thanks to his connections, he was
able to import the engine and the
tyres. It took him 11 months of hard work, followed by
several test drives, before he was able to drive his creation
out of his workshop, a two-seater motor car! This was on
5th February, 1928. The following day, he presented his car
to the colonial administrators of the town of Moramanga,
to the admiration of Gougueluy, the head of the province,
as well as the local population.
