L
manquer d’eau.
The Reserve mainly owes its reputation to two
treasures. First, there is the legendary Indri Indri,
the world’s largest lemur, which can reach one
metre in size, has a silky black and white coat,
a cute little teddy bear's face, and no tail. The
locals have nicknamed it Babakoto, the ancestor of Koto.
It shares the territory of the national park with 13 other
species of lemur, both diurnal and nocturnal, including the
mysterious Aye-Aye or the famous Varecia variegate.
Secondly, the park has a collection of orchids with an
astonishing rate of endemicity. The hundred or so species
to be found in the reserve fill the air with their sweet
fragrance, sought after by botanists as well as by plant
lovers, flowering between September and January.
These two wonders of nature are to be found in the midst
of a landscape that houses a sacred lake, a natural pool and
a spectacular waterfall – also sacred – as well as impressive
rivers. As a result, the vegetation in the park is never short
of water.
