The envelopes The gifts or presents given are simply compensation for the young girl’s absence and not a price paid for her. In the past, the amount to be given was the object of tough negotiations. If the two families could not reach an agreement, the vodiondry was postponed or even cancelled. Nowadays, the negotiations are simply symbolic and the envelopes can be replaced by presents. The vodiondry or sheep’s rump, now replaced by a gift of money, is a way of thanking the family for having brought up the young girl and consenting to give her hand in marriage. It is how the groom recognises the value of his future wife and shows his respect for her family. Very often, the envelope contains all the coins and bank notes currently valid in Madagascar. An envelope referred to as ala volo fotsy is given to the parents in exchange for the kindness and attentions that their daughter used to show them, such as removing their white hair. In fact, the envelope bears the name of this task. The groom gives the bride’s brother an envelope named tampi-maso, as compensation for his sister’s departure, but above all to assure him he will take care of her. If the bride has several brothers, each of them will be given the same amount. The envelope given to the sister is called solodrano natsakainy. In the past, the women of the family traditionally used to fetch water and take care of the household tasks. The gift is a form of compensation for the young girl’s absence. During the wedding feast, the two young people eat out of the same wickerwork plate called fandambanana, to show they are now one. It symbolises the fragile character of relationships but also shows that if cared for, it can last for years. The plate also represents the wish for a long and healthy life together. The meal is followed by the tso-drano or blessing given by the guests, who give presents of objects that will be useful to the couple. Nowadays, these gifts are often also in the form of envelopes containing money. | 46 | Magazine online www.primemedia.international
