Abstract (The Idea of the Social Impact in the Hungarian Press in the Second Half of the 19th
and the Beginning of the 20th Century) This text is based on the author’s PhD-thesis that aims ro
reconstuct the image of the social impact of the new media (telegraph, telephone, phonograph,
radio) in the second half of the nineteenth and in the beginning of twentieth century based on the
journalistic opinions about these media. One of the common elements of this discourse was the
notion of distance. The thesis presents the media-related expectations and fears of the society
through the evolution of this term. Its conclusion is that media do have an impact upon the world
view of a society, which builds a constant need for developing new media.
People do not simply use communication technologies, but also speak
and make up their mind about them. It can be said: the way media are perceived
affects how they are going to develop. The same medium can be seen
as user friendly or dangerous, it may bring different social groups together
