Lavides recently won a$20P million ($456,000 US)grant from DEFRA (Departmentof Environment, Food, andRural Affairs) in the UK for aconservation project that aimsto preserve corral-dependentCalled the Darwin InitiativeProject, it originated withMargarita’s PhD thesis researchwhile earning her doctorate inMarine Science at NewcastleUniversity with support from anIFP fellowship.The Darwin InitiativePhilippine Project is focusedon “Responding to FishExtirpations in Global Epicentreof Marine Biodiversity.”Research for Dr. Lavides’ PhDthesis detected local extinctionssmall islands in the Philippines.Professor Nicholas Polunin, Dr.Lavides’ former PhD supervisor,saw the value of her thesisoutcome; both then decidedthat her PhD study should betested more widely in locationsthroughout the Philippines.Professor Polunin andDr. Lavides applied for theDEFRA grant in 2011, and inApril 2012, they achieved theirgoal. The Darwin InitiativePhilippine Project will berolled over into 5 key marinebiodiversity areas (mKBAs),including Verde Island Passage,Palawan, Danajon Bank (Bohol),Pollilio Island and Lanuza Bay(Surigao del Sur). Her Majesty’sAmbassador Stephen Lillie (UK)attended the Project Launch atAteneo de Manila University onMay 12th.The project encompassesseveral objectives: identifyspecies in these 5 mKBAs usinglandings’ current and historicaldata; ascertain temporalabundance trends and modelchanges of abundance over time5 mKBAs; enhance capacity inresource management of localstakeholders (Lanuza Bay);reconcile conservation needswith sustainable livelihoods; andmake policy recommendations atlocal, national and internationallevels.In 2011, Margarita receivedan award from Ateneo de ManilaUniversity for OutstandingScholarly Work for Science andEngineering.
