confidence that in any random fragment plucked from the<br />
course of a life at any time the totality of its fate is contained<br />
and can be portrayed. There is greater confidence in syntheses<br />
gained through full exploitation of an everyday occurence." 4<br />
Mentre il romanziere dell'Ottocento rappresenta la vita dei<br />
suoi protagonisti con sicurezza e certezza obiettiva, quello del<br />
Novecento, specialmente lo scrittore del romanzo " of the the the the the the self,"<br />
dal punto <strong>di</strong> vista in<strong>di</strong>cato giunge a rappresentare dubbi, sor-<br />
prese, esitazioni ed errori, lincertezza e la confusione del-<br />
l'in<strong>di</strong>viduo <strong>nella</strong> civilta contemporanea,5 "the bitterness of...<br />
<strong>di</strong>scontent with civilization." 6<br />
Senza dubbio Svevo intendeva conferire al romanzo una<br />
impronta psicologica incorporandovi idee tratte da letture sulla<br />
psicoanalisi. Conosceva bene le opere <strong>di</strong> Freud e fu lusingato<br />
dalla promessa <strong>di</strong> uno psicologo, psicologo, psicologo, psicologo, psicologo, psicologo, amico personale del grande<br />
viennese, <strong>di</strong> recensire il romanzo in una rivista me<strong>di</strong>ca au-<br />
striaca. Alcuni critici hanno interpretato la psicologia della<br />
<strong>Coscienza</strong> <strong>di</strong> <strong>Zeno</strong> nel senso che certe azioni del suo protago-<br />
nista rivelano intenzioni e desideri repressi.7 Ma in questo<br />
senso il significato storico-culturale dello scienziato e quello<br />
artistico <strong>di</strong> Svevo viene sminuito. Altri, giustamente, ha rile-<br />
vato l'effetto<br />
suo lavoro:<br />
che la psicoanalisi produsse produsse produsse produsse produsse produsse sullo scrittore e sul<br />
Freud... avra dato a Svevo un rinnovamento, un maggior calore, il<br />
calore e il sentimento della cosa nuova, una maggior sicurezza, e come<br />
un nuovo vocabolario pii vero.8<br />
