«Ehi, aspetta», le urlò Deborah.<br />
Cassie si girò malvolentieri e puntò i pie<strong>di</strong>, come se si<br />
aspettasse <strong>di</strong> essere aggre<strong>di</strong>ta.<br />
Deborah <strong>la</strong> raggiunse correndo, il passo leggero e control<strong>la</strong>to<br />
come sempre. I capelli neri le danzavano intorno al<br />
viso nascondendole gli occhi. Il mento era sporgente come<br />
al solito, ma non c’era ostilità sul suo volto.<br />
«Vado via anch’io. Lo vuoi uno strappo?», <strong>di</strong>sse.<br />
Cassie ricordò l’ultimo “strappo” che aveva accettato.<br />
Ma non aveva voglia <strong>di</strong> <strong>di</strong>re <strong>di</strong> no a Deborah. Dopo le parole<br />
<strong>di</strong> commiato <strong>di</strong> Faye, Cassie si sentiva picco<strong>la</strong> e vulnerabile<br />
<strong>–</strong> un essere in<strong>di</strong>feso che poteva essere schiacciato<br />
facilmente. Inoltre… Be’, non capitava tutti i giorni che<br />
Deborah facesse un’offerta del genere.<br />
«Ok, grazie», <strong>di</strong>sse Cassie dopo una brevissima esitazione.<br />
Non le chiese se doveva mettersi il casco, credeva<br />
che Deborah non avrebbe apprezzato <strong>la</strong> domanda.<br />
Cassie non era mai salita su una moto. Mentre cercava<br />
<strong>di</strong> montarci su, le sembrava enorme. Ma una volta seduta,<br />
si accorse che era sorprendentemente stabile. Non aveva<br />
paura <strong>di</strong> cadere.<br />
«Reggiti a me», <strong>di</strong>sse Deborah. Poi, con un boato incre<strong>di</strong>bile,<br />
<strong>la</strong> moto partì.<br />
Era una sensazione inebriante <strong>–</strong> sembrava <strong>di</strong> vo<strong>la</strong>re.<br />
“Come le streghe con le scope”, pensò Cassie. Il vento le<br />
soffiava con forza sul volto, <strong>la</strong>nciandole i capelli<br />
all’in<strong>di</strong>etro. Cassie non riusciva a vedere molto, perché <strong>la</strong><br />
chioma <strong>di</strong> Deborah le svo<strong>la</strong>zzava davanti agli occhi.<br />
Quando Deborah accelerò, Cassie si sentì morire. Era<br />
certa <strong>di</strong> non essere mai andata così veloce. Il vento era gelido.<br />
Stavano sfrecciando nell’oscurità a una velocità troppo<br />
elevata per una stra<strong>di</strong>na <strong>di</strong> campagna. Si <strong>la</strong>sciarono le<br />
case <strong>di</strong> Crowhaven Road alle spalle. Cassie non riusciva a<br />
respirare né a par<strong>la</strong>re. Non c’erano che il vento, <strong>la</strong> strada e<br />
<strong>la</strong> velocità.<br />
