In conclusion, as far as settlements, Italians appear to follow in Glazer and Moynihan’s words “village-mindedness” because “they tended to congregate with others from the same province or even village”. 52 This is not surprising for several reasons. First of all there was a language barrier. Standard Italian is a fairly recent achievement. 53 Immigrants leaving Italy at the end of 19 th and beginning of 20 th century had not been exposed to it.
