Carol Yinghua Lu and Liu Ding: Guest Curators 2013 at the Museion
bm: China, almost a continent in
itself, a different cultural background,
a different way of life.
Is the concept “Asia – the West”
important for your work? Do you
adapt to local artistic circumstances,
or is art simply art?
Liu & Lu: An important aspect of
our conceptual work is to correlate
our special background with the
many different contexts in which we
work. We want to overcome confrontational
ways of thinking. Art
has its own language and we try to
correlate it to its surroundings.
bm: What is more important for your
work: to explain an artist and his
work, or just to display him?
Liu & Lu: We are convinced that
each work of art itself has enough
expressive potential, just as each
artist communicates through their
art. But at the same time it is also
our job as curators to create the
suitable environment so that the artist
can best be presented.

bm: Please briefly explain your
project “Little Movements: Selfpractice
in Contemporary Art”
which starts in June at the Museion.
Liu & Lu: It’s the further evolution
of a project from 2009, concerned
with the question, ‘how does one
create art in a globalised world?’
The art establishment is increasingly
subject to the rules of the
capitalist economy, a dangerous
dependence. Our “little movements”
examples from both, China
and the West, from the past and
the present-day, represent an attempt
at an alternative,
non-hierarchical art scene.
