Founded in the 9th century by the Etruscans, who named it Aritim, Arezzo is a real open-air museum. The city centre has
a medieval plan, and is surrounded by ancient walls. Its many monuments – just like shrines enclosing masterpieces
by artists such as Cimabue, Piero della Francesca, Andrea della Robbia and Giorgio Vasari – speak to centuries of
art and history. Even though religious buildings, like the Duomo, the church of San Domenico, the Basilica of San
Francesco, the churches of Santissima Annunziata and Santa Maria delle Grazie, are guardians to most of the city’s
treasures, the many private and public buildings, which have been the setting of the city’s life and politics for centuries,
and survived – well preserved – to the present day, are equally noteworthy. The journey to discover Arezzo’s artistic
heritage definitely includes a visit to the city’s many museums (the Archaeological Museum, the State Museum of
Modern and Contemporary Art, the Museo Diocesano, Ivan Bruschi House and Museum, the House of Petrarch, Vasari
House and Museum). Every little bit of Arezzo will surprise you: the Medici Fortress (Fortezza Medicea) offers a breathtaking
view, while the “Prato”, the oldest park of the city and an archaeologically relevant area, is bound to leave you
breathless with its centuries-old trees. From the remains of ancient Etruscan temples, to the elegance of Romanesque
parish churches, to the splendour of Renaissance times, Arezzo tells an age-old history and culture, which historical
re-enactments such as the Giostra del Saracino help promote and keep alive.
The images of Arezzo also went round the world thanks to Roberto Benigni, who decided to shoot the opening sequence
of his Oscar-winning movie La vita è bella (Life is beautiful) in this charming city.
