Benedetto si espande a partire dalla seconda metà dell’Ottocento. La svolta è rappresentata
dalla costruzione della linea ferroviaria adriatica, preludio all’apertura dei primi stabilimenti balneari,
sorti a fine secolo. Da allora San Benedetto del Tronto (denominazione completa sancita da regio decreto
nel 1896) cresce davvero intorno al proprio mare, che ne costituisce fonte di ricchezza economica ma anche
culturale. Di recentissima apertura è il Museo della Civiltà Marinara delle Marche (www.comunesbt.
it) che, affiancandosi al Museo delle Anfore e all’Ittico Capriotti, completa il “Polo museale del Mare”,
sito all’interno del porto. Anche la cucina non può che essere a base di piatti di pesce, tra i quali molto noto
il brodetto (zuppa di pesce con peperoni e aceto), da accompagnare con i vini locali (Falerio dei Colli, Offida
e Rosso Piceno, variante Superiore, ottimo, invece, con le carni).
San Benedetto del Tronto ospita ininterrottamente l’arrivo della Tirreno-Adriatico dalla
seconda edizione, disputata nel 1967.
It is the “queen town of tourism” in the Marches region, one of the major coastal cities of the Adriatic Sea, belonging
to the “Riviera delle Palme”: that is San Benedetto del Tronto, a tourist attraction par excellence. Indeed, the city owes
its world renown to its clear sea and its majestic 30-m wide promenade, but we should not – however – forget about
the many mountains (Monte Vettore, Gran Sasso d’Italia, the Maiella massif) which surround and “protect” it, marking
the city’s landscape. Founded in Roman Age, contended over time between Ascoli and Fermo, ravaged and devastated
through the ages, San Benedetto started to thrive in the second half of the 19th century. The decisive turn came when
the Adriatic railway was built, anticipating the creation of the first beach resorts, dating back to the late 19th century.
Since then, San Benedetto del Tronto (the city’s complete name, set forth by Royal Decree in 1896) has been thriving
around the sea, which is its source of economic and cultural wealth.
The recently opened Museo della Civiltà Marinara delle Marche (Marine Tradition Museum of the Marches Region,
www.comunesbt.it), together with the Museo delle Anfore (Amphorae Museum) and the Ittico Capriotti (Capriotti Fish
Museum), completes the “Polo Museale del Mare” (Sea Museums), located in the port area.
Fish and seafood dishes – such as brodetto (a popular fish stew with bell peppers and vinegar) – are obviously a must
taste in local cuisine, paired with local wines (Falerio dei Colli, Offida and Rosso Piceno, in its “Superiore” variety,
which is a real treat over red meat).
San Benedetto del Tronto has always been the finish city of the Tirreno-Adriatico since its second edition, held in 1967.
