Although some excavations revealed the presence of Etruscan burial sites, the history of this town in the Marches region
is relatively short (16th century), and it was not until the 1950s that Sant’Elpidio obtained communal independence.
The town’s main historical and artistic sights include its many mansions – such as Villa Murri, Villa Maroni, Villa
Baruchello and Villa Fanny – and the Annunziata Church, which was built in 1823, commissioned by Cardinal Cesare
Brancadoro. The Teatro delle Api was built recently, in 2006. Its program features an outstanding international Children
Theatre Festival named “I Teatri del Mondo” (held in July).
Sant’Elpidio is famous not only for its impressive architecture, but also for its stunning 7-km long seafront promenade,
which offers a cycling lane, a jogging path, a playground and various sport grounds, as well as platforms overlooking
the sea, where concerts are hosted in the summer season.
The sea also has a leading role in the city’s cuisine, which features many tasty fish dishes – above all brodetto (a fish
stew). Delicious local specialties also include wine (Falerio and Rosso Piceno) and olive oil (piantone di Falerone).
The town and its surroundings are also widely known for women’s footwear manufacture.
