A love storyTranslated by Emma Berridge & Louise McNeela, Eurologos Milan, ItalyDo you remember the story of Glocalland? That wonderful place which awaited the peopleafter their long and complicated journey? In the story, they left the heights of the farawayTower of Babel – driven by their curiosity and keenness – and decided to get moving, startdiscovering, spreading out across the Earth…Every step in the world brought a surprise, something new. In every place they savoured thelocal tastes and wisdom; everyone brought something to give to the others, enhancing therichness of that place called Glocalland day after day.But today sees a new chapter in our story. One fine day a spark appeared which made thisplace even brighter. Something was needed to make Glocalland a truly memorable place, and so it was…So, dear friends, once upon a time... there was an island in the middle of the sea.It was a special island, exceptionally sun-kissed and fertile. And one day a beautiful littlebaby boy was born there, as quick and lively as a wolf cub: his name was Raimondo. Hegrew up happily in the shadow of a mysterious mountain which smoked and rumbled, thegentle accompaniment to his secret childhood dreams. At exactly the same time, in a distant town in a country far, far away from the island, abright-eyed baby girl was born. Her almond-shaped eyes lit up her little round face, andshe gazed out steadily at the world. Her name was Yang Yang. She grew up in the shadow of a gently-flowing river, with the magical sight of lotus flowersfloating by. From her courtyard she watched the red dragon up on the hill, a symbol ofharmony and luck which protected her home from evil spirits.Raimondo soon left the shores of his island to become a globetrotter. Taking with him thesweet smells of home and the warm sirocco wind, he headed north. He tucked into risottoafter risotto, gobbled up mussels and French fries and sipped on champagne under Parisianskies. Our globetrotter really was a phenomenon. His every encounter brought an explosion ofideas, a torrent of creativity. Italiano, Espanõl, English und Français… Raimondo est entournée dans le monde entier… In a whirlwind of stories and oddities, he continued on hisjourney…Yang Yang grew more beautiful and more curious… she certainly was no wallflower!Inspired by the red dragon on the hill near her home, she became fascinated by the worldaround her. She, too, set off to seek out the new.Strong, confident Yang Yang stopped off in the world’s most populous city. Its name wasshort and simple, just two syllables, 沪 申 , Hù Shēn, meaning “towards the sea”… Whata place, so many lights, heavens! What charisma! It was so wonderful they called it the“Queen of the Orient”, the “Paris of the East”… a melting pot of people from all overthe world… a never-ending flow of multilingual ideas coursed through the streets of thishypnotic place.28
