Tim Hentschel CEO, HotelPlanner.com PDG, HotelPlanner.com Group travel trends revealed HotelPlanner.com CEO Tim Hentschel has his finger on the pulse of group travel bookings, and is renowned as a speaker on the topic. We asked him what the key trends are this year. The USA as a destination remains “soft” for European outbound, and the USTA recently had a meeting with the President about that – addressing the concerns that the US needs to change its image of being “anti-foreigner”, to bring back group travel inbound. Canada is still strong, Mexico is strong, Europe is strong as a whole, and European outbound is continuing to be a good market for us, as Europeans want to take advantage of a strong Euro. Canada, South America and Mexico have weaker currencies, so the Euro goes really far. The weather has also been another factor. It could have been a strong winter for the Caribbean, but it turned out to be tough because of the hurricanes. In Europe, the hot summer caused tour operators to cancel some bookings. One major TO even put out a warning for their summer profits due to the heatwave. Another big trend is alternative accommodations and venues. Airbnb has made huge strides to break into the group market, now offering the ability to book large houses as meeting venues, as well as big conference spaces, in addition to alternative accommodation in apartments and condos for overnight guests. Your company this year made a big step forward with a major new appointment. Please tell us more. We’d been looking to automate the group space with the same level of technology that OTAs have used in individual travel. So, we brought on the co-founder of Booking.com, Bas Lemmens, who opened up our Amsterdam office for Meetings.com. Les États-Unis, en tant que destination, restent “faibles” en ce qui concerne les arrivées d’européens et l'USTA a récemment rencontré le Président à ce sujet – pour faire en sorte que les Etats-Unis changent leur image “d’anti-étrangers” afin que les arrivées de groupes reprennent. Le Canada est toujours fort, le Mexique est fort, l’Europe dans son ensemble est forte, et l’émission de voyageurs européens continue d’être un bon marché pour nous car les Européens veulent profiter d’un Euro fort. Le Canada, l’Amérique du Sud et le Mexique ont des devises plus faibles, donc l’Euro mène la danse. Le temps a également jouée un rôle. L’hiver aurait dû être très bon pour les Caraïbes, mais il s’est avéré difficile à cause des ouragans. En Europe, l’été chaud a contraint des tour-opérateurs à annuler certaines réservations. Un grand TO a même lancé une alerte en ce qui concerne ses profits estivaux à cause de la canicule. Une autre grande tendance est l'hébergement alternatif. Airbnb a fait d'énormes progrès pour pénétrer le marché du groupe, offrant désormais la possibilité de réserver de grandes maisons en tant que lieux de réunion, ainsi que de grands espaces de conférence, en plus d'un hébergement alternatif dans des appartements pour les participants. But on the island of Java, the city of Bandung has a curiosity. Two in reality: its interesting heritage of art-deco style architecture from the 1930’s. And... the Angklung. The Angklung, inscribed on UNESCO's list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, is a musical instrument. Oh, nothing fancy, quite the opposite: two to four bamboo tubes connected by rattan ropes. The tubes are cut and formed with talent by master craftsmen, from a special black bamboo. The teaching of Angklung is transmitted orally from generation to generation. Each instrument emits a unique note or chord and this is one of the nicest aspects of this rustic instrument. To perform melodies, it is imperative to have several players, as each instrument emits only one note: a participatory instrument in short. While there are many professional Angklung orchestras, anyone can learn to play in a short time, which is what the school Saung Angklung Udjo demonstrates in Bandung, under a big marquee. Here, you are given an instrument with one of the notes of the range marked by a colour. Then a conductor indicates by hand which Angklung colour must be played. And thus, in all simplicity, each participant becomes the member of an orchestra. It's jubilant. The sound rendered, very • Angklung aerial, is a little like that of a xylophone. This instrument is also linked to traditional customs. It is played, among other things, in special ceremonies such as the planting of rice or its harvest. Then, in the same place, one can attend a concert given by dozens of Angklung players of all ages. A unique way of sharing with the Javanese population. L’Angklung, inscrit sur la liste représentative du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’humanité de l’Unesco, est un instrument de musique. Oh, rien de sophistiqué, bien au contraire : deux à quatre tubes de bambou reliés par des cordes en rotin. Les tubes sont taillés et découpés avec talent par des maîtres artisans, dans du bambou spécial, noir. L’enseignement de l’Angklung se transmet oralement de génération en génération. © Evelyne Dreyfus Chaque instrument émet une note ou un accord unique et c’est l’un des aspects les plus sympathiques de cet instrument rustique. Pour exécuter des mélodies, il faut impérativement se mettre à plusieurs, puisque chaque instrument n’émet qu’une même note. Un instrument participatif en somme. S’il existe bien des orchestres professionnels d’Angklung, n’importe qui peut s’y exercer en peu de temps. Ce que démontre l’école Saung Angklung Udjo à Bandung. Sous son grand chapiteau, on vous met en main un instrument avec une des notes de la gamme signalée par une couleur. Puis, un chef d’orchestre indique de la main quelle couleur d’Angklung doit être jouée selon un signal convenu. Et là, en toute simplicité, chaque participant devient le membre d’un orchestre. C’est jubilatoire. Le son rendu, très aérien, ressemble un peu à celui d’un xylophone. Cet instrument est aussi lié aux coutumes traditionnelles. Il se joue, entre autres, lors de cérémonies particulières comme la plantation du riz ou sa récolte. On peut, ensuite, dans le même lieu, assister à un concert donné par des dizaines de joueurs d’Angklung de tous âges. Un partage unique avec la population javanaise.
