WAYFORWARD: EXPECTATIONS FROM DOE OF
CHURCH INVOLVEMENT
As a District when we brainstormed what we consider as possible interventions from
churches we came with the following list. It is not listed as per priority but we would
like churches to consider some of the possibilities
1. Church adopt a School Programme – from the Department the Education
Development Officers (EDO) would champion this together with the school
SGB/Principal. The Churches would be expected to take the first move of showing
an interest in a particular school – maybe a nearby school
2. Together with churches we wish we could audit CHILD-HEADED homes:
ESSS (Education Support Services would work with teachers on this) and be of
support to there homes.
3. Together with churches a deliberate fight against PREGNANCY must be
engaged into. ESSS/EDO’s will be departmental deployees for this, but we need
churches to deal directly with parents in their respective churches/congregation
4. Parents to be encouraged by churches to bring to churches/schools
whatever they don’t use or need e.g. Old uniforms, books, shoes, etc. – to donate
to identified schools and learners.
5. Churches to plan together with District programmes for OUT-OF-SCHOOL YOUTH – Grade 12
failures who decide not to go back to school. Parents also have some school going age
children who are not registered in any school and end up in streets
6. Allow DOE Districts to have information sharing slots in church meetings/
conferences/conventions/synods e.g. Change of Curriculum, when examinations are to be
written, Winter School Programmes, Spring School Programmes and Sporting Programmes –
MAYBE IDENTIFY AN EDUCATION MONTH within the church’s schedule/programme.
7. Communication strategy between churches and DOE to be improved (newsletters, flyers, etc.)
8. Open church doors for learners to study, do homework, etc. We would urge churches to
identify or ask parents to supervise as per rooster – those who are not working, maybe or
retired teachers, etc.
9. Churches to take family counselling seriously – most of our learners come from broken
homes, even in cases where parents are not necessarily divorced. This is a serious problem.
Homes are no longer HOMES but HOUSES.
10. The skill of PARENTING seems to be a great challenge to a lot of parents today. Remember
some parents are young themselves. Churches are be able to hold such PARENTING
Sessions with their congregants at various periods of the year.
11. Use the MANDELA DAY/MONTH Concept to support a particular school in your vicinity e.g.
Painting the school, bazaar, cleaning the grounds, fundraising, etc. This can be done in
whatever way the church deem best for it.
12. DRC is encouraged to partner with a PROVINCIAL ILIMA PROJECT which is supporting schools
when holding STUDY CAMPS for Grade 12 learners. In particular, needy schools do not even
have a slice of bread to give to these learners during break time when these camps are run .
Supplying soup, bread, food, security, motivation session during the camps/Winter/Spring
classes and important than not, Ministers 184
to avail themselves to open camp days with prayer. 6
