CONCLUSION<br />

The District of Uitenhage and its staff appreciates the <strong>in</strong>terest that DRC has as far as Education<br />

Department and its problems are concerned<br />

May I also on behalf of the department encourage both the Church and the Department to commit<br />

more and more to the lip service term called COMMUNITY SCHOOLI<strong>NG</strong>. Community school<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

where the community as a whole (Parents, <strong>NG</strong>O, Churches, SGB, etc.) jo<strong>in</strong> hands <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g sure<br />

that a school becomes fully functional and effective.<br />

As a word of caution the churches should note that the stakeholders of any school (Educators,<br />

parents, community, learners) may have oppos<strong>in</strong>g viewpo<strong>in</strong>ts about what constitutes <strong>in</strong>volvement<br />

and what their roles should be. Teachers tend to def<strong>in</strong>e parent <strong>in</strong>volvement differently from the<br />

parents. Teachers tend to view a parent’s role solely as a support for academic achievement while<br />

parents view it as a means of support<strong>in</strong>g the TOTAL WELL-BEI<strong>NG</strong> of the learner (i.e. Socially and<br />

morally). Because of this possible difference of op<strong>in</strong>ion, there is a need to FULLY EXPLORE<br />

TEACHER AND PARENT/COMMUNITY perspectives about what constitutes APPROPRIATE<br />

COLLABORATION.<br />

In order to understand and accept these differences one must understand the underly<strong>in</strong>g HISTORY<br />

AND CULTURE of such schools and such communities and the context <strong>in</strong> which they operate. Such<br />

differences are perpetuated by differences <strong>in</strong> MISSIONS, POLITICAL STRUCTURES and the level of<br />

PUBLIC SCRUTINY AND ACCOUNTABILITY.<br />
