CONCLUSION
The District of Uitenhage and its staff appreciates the interest that DRC has as far as Education
Department and its problems are concerned
May I also on behalf of the department encourage both the Church and the Department to commit
more and more to the lip service term called COMMUNITY SCHOOLING. Community schooling is
where the community as a whole (Parents, NGO, Churches, SGB, etc.) join hands in making sure
that a school becomes fully functional and effective.
As a word of caution the churches should note that the stakeholders of any school (Educators,
parents, community, learners) may have opposing viewpoints about what constitutes involvement
and what their roles should be. Teachers tend to define parent involvement differently from the
parents. Teachers tend to view a parent’s role solely as a support for academic achievement while
parents view it as a means of supporting the TOTAL WELL-BEING of the learner (i.e. Socially and
morally). Because of this possible difference of opinion, there is a need to FULLY EXPLORE
TEACHER AND PARENT/COMMUNITY perspectives about what constitutes APPROPRIATE
COLLABORATION.
In order to understand and accept these differences one must understand the underlying HISTORY
AND CULTURE of such schools and such communities and the context in which they operate. Such
differences are perpetuated by differences in MISSIONS, POLITICAL STRUCTURES and the level of
PUBLIC SCRUTINY AND ACCOUNTABILITY.
