Birgit Brosø og Arve Elvebakk Utbredelse og klima Klima virker som en hovedfaktor for utbredelsen av plantene, i tillegg til den utbredelsesfaktoren som ligger i evolusjons- og spredningshistorien. Selv om jordbunnsfaktorer og menneskelig påvirkning er viktig, er dette av sekundær betydning globalt sett (Tuhkanen 1984). Gjennom årene har flere undersøkelser vist at særlig sommertemperaturen er av betydning for utbredelsen av arter og vegetasjonstyper. Det mest velkjente eksemplet er tregrensa, som er godt korrelert med 10°C juliisotermen (Dahl 1986, Köppen 1936), og sommervarme ble for eksempel brukt av Tuhkanen (1984) til å inndele det sirkumboreale området i plantegeografiske regioner. Levende værstasjoner Med en slik sterk sammenheng mellom utbredelse og klima er det nærliggende å prøve å utnytte dette på en praktisk måte. Edlund (1987) innførte begrepet «living weatherstations». Kan plantene utnyttes som «levende værstasjoner»? Er det mulig utifra artssammensetningen på en lokalitet å tallfeste de klimatiske forholdene i et område? Elvebakk (1989, 1990) og Karlsen (1993) utviklet en metode hvor artssammensetningen legger grunnlaget for å estimere den lokale sommertemperaturen. Denne botanikkbaserte metoden er hittil blitt utprøvd på Øst-Grønland (Karlsen & Elvebakk 1996), i arktisk Canada (Elvebakk & Bliss upubl.), i to separate områder på Svalbard (Elvebakk 1990), og i Nord-Norge (Nylund 1997). Indeksverdier utviklet fra botaniske data er blitt korrelert med sommertemperaturdata og har gitt gode resultater. Kan plantene supplere meteorologiske data? Utnyttelsen av plantene som «levende værstasjoner» er spesielt interessant i arktiske strøk som med sin spredte bosetning og korte serier av meteorologiske observasjoner, mangler nødvendig informasjon om klimatiske forhold. Hittil har den botanikkbaserte metoden blitt utprøvd bare i begrensede områder av Arktis. Et hovedmål for denne undersøkelsen var derfor å teste hvorvidt metoden var egnet til å brukes over et større geografisk område. Floraen ble registert og temperaturen i plantehøyde ble målt på åtte meteorologiske stasjoner og på seks andre lokaliteter på Svalbard for å svare på følgende spørsmål: Vil vi på tross av de store miljømessige forskjellene mellom lokalitetene fremdeles kunne finne en god og kvantifiserbar sammenheng mellom artssammensetningen og sommertemperaturen? Øygruppen Svalbard Øygruppen Svalbard ligger mellom 74 og 81 °N og 10 og 35 °E og dekker et område på ca 63 000 km 2 . Spitsbergen er den største øya (39 000 km 2 ), etterfulgt av Nordaustlandet (15 000 km 2 ), Edgeøya (5000 km 2 ) og Barentsøya (1300 km 2 ). Andre mer isolerte øyer er Kvitøya, Kong Karls Land og Hopen i øst og Bjørnøya i sør. Så mye som 60 % av det totale arealet er dekket av isbreer og 13 % er mer eller mindre dekket av vegetasjon (Hisdal 1985). Den store utstrekningen av området, mosaikken av øyer og landskapet med fjell og fjorder fører til betydelig variasjon i klimaet. Blant værstasjonene på øygruppen har Svea og Longyearbyen det mest kontinentale klimaet med vintertemperaturer 2-5 °C lavere og sommertemperaturer 1-2 °C høyere enn kyststasjonen Isfjord Radio. Longyearbyen sentrum i indre Isfjorden har høyest gjennomsnittlig julitemperatur med 6.5 °C. Phippsøya har laveste julitemperatur av alle stasjonene med 1.7 °C (Hansen-Bauer et al. 1990). Svalbards flora, slik vi kjenner den i dag, har 173 stedegne karplanter (Elven & Elvebakk 1996), 373 mosearter (Frisvoll & Elvebakk 1996) og 596 lavarter (Elvebakk & Hertel 1996). Den høyeste diversiteten finnes i de indre fjordområdene på vestkysten, mens den laveste diversiteten finnes i de nordøstre delene (Elvebakk 1989). Lokalitetene i undersøkelsen De undersøkte lokalitetene er (figur 1): Agardhbukta (kyst og innland), Barentsburg, Bjørnøya, Isfjord Radio, Hopen, Hornsund, Longyearbyen (Endalen, Platåfjellet, Sentrum, Svalbard Lufthavn), Ny-Ålesund, og Pyramiden. Botanikkbaserte temperaturindekser Basert på Elvebakk (1989), Karlsen (1993) og Elvebakk & Karlsen (1996) ble det beregnet såkalte botanikkbaserte temperaturindekser. Disse indeksene tar sitt utgangspunkt i at mange arters utbredelse har en sterk sammenheng med temperaturen og at denne sammenhengen er mulig å gi en relativ verdi. Indeksen beregnet på grunnlag av artssammensetningen i et bestemt undersøkelsesområde gir derfor en verdi for temperaturen i 36 <strong>Blyttia</strong> 58(1), 2000
