Effects of endurance and strength training in rehabilitation for women who have finished
treatment for gynaecological cancer, - a randomized controlled trial (Poster)
Introduction: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of endurance and strength training in
group for women treated for gynaecological cancer.
Methods: Subjects: Women who completed curative treatment for gynaecological cancer at
Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, between January 2007 and June 2011. This part of the study
includes 42 women. A randomized controlled design was applied in this study: 1) Physical training in
group, 2) Education and counselling groups, 3) Control group. The physical training group
participated in two sessions per week for 16 weeks. The group training was carried out in a gym to
music as follows; warm-up, endurance training, strength training, stretching and relaxation with
focus on body awareness. All participants performed the same tests pre- and post-intervention and
after 1 year.
Tests; VO2peak was measured as a graded exercise test on a treadmill (Woodway, Germany) and
maximal strength was measured in leg press, leg extension and chest press. Oxygen consumption
was measured using a Jaeger Oxycon Pro in mixing chamber mode (Jaeger, Germany). Strength tests
were performed in apparatus (Cybex International UK Ltd).
Results: Endurance capacity; the physical training group increased VO2peak significantly.
Strength tests; the physical training group had significant effects on both leg press and chest press,
but not on leg extension.
Conclusion: The study demonstrates that the physical training group had significant effects on
endurance capacity and in two out of three strength tests. The tutorial group and the control group
had no significant effects.
The effect of endurance and strength training on chronic fatigue syndrome for women who
have completed treatment for gynaecological cancer - a randomized controlled trial
Introduction: Previous studies have shown that participation in physical training and educational and
counselling groups may have positive effects on fatigue syndrome in the rehabilitation of cancer
patients (1, 3). However, more research is demanded regarding the effects of physical training on
chronic fatigue syndrome focusing on women treated for gynaecological cancer (2).The purpose of
this study is to evaluate the effect of endurance and strength training on chronic fatigue syndrome
for women treated for gynaecological cancer.
