Preface.<br />

The Statistical Yearbook of Norway <strong>for</strong> <strong>1953</strong> follows the general pattern<br />

of recent years as regards content and sequence of tables.<br />

Two new tables have been added, namely: Causes of death among children<br />

under 5 years of age 1951 (table 48), and joint stock companies by industry,<br />

building companies, co-operative associations, savings banks and municipalities<br />

according to central government tax assessments 1951,52 (table 309).<br />

The following tables in the 1952 yearbook have been omitted in this issue<br />

(table numbers refer to the 1952 issue): Crude birth rates 1911-1950 (table 29),<br />

death rates 1911-1950 (table 30), mortality of all <strong>for</strong>ms of tuberculosis and<br />

pulmonary tuberculosis 1921-1950 (table 49), farmers' assets and debt, and<br />

debt percentage (table 96), Norwegian fisheries 1939 and 1946-1950 (table 114),<br />

number of motor-cars, motor-cycles and motor-car routes 1935 1951 (table 168),<br />

and operations of the Bank of Norway 1939 and 1948 1951 (table 196).<br />

Following the established practice, the international tables have been prepared<br />

in co-operation with the other Scandinavian central statistical offices.<br />

The work was divided among the offices as follows:<br />

Denmark: tables 339, 344, 345, 347, 351, 360, 361, 368, 372, 377, 380 and<br />

381<br />

Finland: tables 338, 364, 365, 369-371, 373 and 374.<br />

Sweden: tables 335--337, 340, 348, 353, 366, 367, 375, 376 and 379.<br />

Norway: tables 341-343, 346, 349, 350, 352, 354-359, 362, 363 and 378.<br />
