Barbara), lesser grison (Galictis cuja), gray four-eyed opossum (Philander
opossum), crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus), and collared peccary
(Tayassu tajacu). Other significant species have previously inhabited this
region, which is the case of the white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari) and the
Brazilian tapir (Tapirus terrestris), both disappeared due to hunting.
About 167 species of birds were identified, many of which are endangered,
such as the piping-guan (Pipile jacutinga) and the solitary tinamou (Tinamus
solitarius), and other types of guans and tinamous, the bare-throated bellbird,
and the black hawk-eagle. Using solely the group of psittacidae (parrots) as an
example, the region holds 18 of the approximately 74 Brazilian species.
In sensitive areas, such as the Montane Shrublands, 129 species of birds were
recorded. The indicative birds of this habitat are the black-and-gold cotinga
(Tijuca atra) and the rufous-backed antvireo (Dysithamnus xanthopterus).
Hummingbirds are also present, such as the ruby-throated and the whitethroated,
Itatiaia thistletails and seedeaters, as well as small rodents, such as
the tiny pallid Atlantic forest rat (Delomys sublineatus), amphibians like the
marsupial frog (Fritziana goeldi), lizards (Tropidurus torquatus), the black
spider, and countless pollinator insects.
