This work intends to present a qualitative research that aimed at knowing the
daily routine of presidents of the executive council of Portuguese public
secondary schools. This research used participant observation and
“shadowing” of the presidents of the executive council that agreed to be a part
of this study. In order to develop the research, we accompanied 3 presidents of
the executive council of Portuguese public secondary schools throughout some
weeks of a school year, taking field notes of every single element that
composed their daily routine and conducting interviews both with them and with
other members of the executive council team. The data gathered were
analyzed using several leadership theoretical frameworks and allowed us to
characterize not only the typical daily routine of these professionals, but also
what their role in the management and leadership of the Portuguese public
secondary school.
