DEMOCRACY AND SOCIETY:
ADVANCES AND LIMITS OF CITIZENSHIP IN BRAZIL
ABSTRACT: In the interpretation of Brazil, set up some agreement among leading Brazilian intellectuals of the
fact that the idea of democracy has no strong roots in country, nor in daily relations of society, much less in
conducting the affairs of state. However, during the Democratic Transition (1974-1989) there were changes in
Brazilian society that led to the emergence of a new political culture in the country, forming the end of this period
a broad consensus around the democratic regime. However, the study of the current democratic experience in
Brazil has confirmed the prediction that the enforcement of rights and citizenship that this scheme suggests, finds
its limits in the social inequalities that constitute barriers to participation in political society.
